The Rocks Market

The Rocks Market

The Rocks Market is a popular market located in Sydney. It was not originally part of my itinerary, but our tour guide recommended it as an additional stop. It was during my visit to this market that I made the decision to apply for a working holiday in Australia, which was one of the reasons that motivated me to do so after returning to Taiwan.

The Rocks Market

One thing that made this market stand out was not just the handmade crafts being sold, but also the presence of photographers selling their own works. One particular photographer caught my eye with his tent set up like a small art gallery showcasing his stunning pieces.

Despite the limited space, his talent was evident in the quality of his work. I could tell he was a highly skilled artist. I refrained from taking any photos out of respect for the artist and also because I felt that being there in person was more powerful and moving than seeing it through a lens.

One of the main highlights of this market was the friendly atmosphere. You didn't have to worry about your English skills because everyone was welcoming and enthusiastic to introduce their art and crafts.

For me, this market was definitely one of the best in Australia, with its focus on art, local vibes, and expansive venue. The atmosphere of the market was so captivating that I felt like I was living in a movie. The live music performances added to the charm of the market, and while I didn't have any unexpected romantic encounters like in a movie, there was no shortage of warm and friendly interactions with the locals.

The market was bustling with people, and when my friend took a photo of me, a cute passerby happened to be captured in the shot and became the center of attention in the frame.

I remember standing in front of this vendor's stall for a long time, admiring the different depictions of various places in Sydney in his paintings. I was hesitant to approach him, afraid that he might speak in difficult English and leave me at a loss for words.

As a first-time visitor to Australia, I was still a bit anxious and cautious about everything, afraid of making mistakes or saying the wrong thing. However, I regretted not being more outgoing and interacting with the vendor at the market. When I later went to Australia for a working holiday, I decided to challenge myself and learn to order food or have conversations in English. It took me a couple of months to gain the confidence to speak up, but now I consider myself a fearless woman when it comes to language barriers.

The artist warmly greeted us and asked where we were from using simple English, making us feel like old friends without any pressure or stress.

When I told him how much I loved his art and asked if I could take a picture, he asked me to wait for a moment and then quickly came over to join us in the photo. He was such an adorable artist.

In the end, I bought my favorite cloth bag from him. The bags he sold were designed to be painted with your favorite colors, allowing you to interact with his artwork. The price was about 30 AUD, and it was definitely worth it.

After returning to Taiwan, I often still carry this artist's cloth bag.

As I strolled around, I unknowingly accumulated a lot of souvenirs in my hands.

There was also a hand-painted watercolor illustrator whose style was very cute. I remember she introduced to us the little stories behind each of her animals, even though I couldn't understand her very well, I felt her passion and enthusiasm.

I also bought a handmade bracelet at this market. When we arrived at the stall, there were already a lot of people gathered around. It was an older man with a beard who was making the bracelets on the spot, while his wife was selling them.

The bracelet was made of brass, and I have been wearing it for many years with only a little fading. It also has a decorative bead. The craftsmanship is very delicate and it's not easy to break. It was around 20 to 30 AUD. Watching the old man make the bracelets on the spot was very soothing, and I don't know if he's still there. I would love to buy more if I could. It was surprising that when I returned to Taiwan, some strangers walked up to me and asked where I bought it. It just shows how amazing this grandpa is.

As I walked around, I always found little surprises, like this corner I discovered. On the wall was a hand-drawn evolution of Sydney from the 1930s to the present day. I really appreciated how they valued art and their own culture, making even a small corner look so beautiful and inviting that I just wanted to keep exploring.

I was really startled by something unexpected - I saw a zombie sitting at the counter through a window. Later on, I found out that it was just a promotion for a ghost tour.

This ghost tour is an experience where you can explore the spooky history and visit areas that are usually inaccessible at night in The Rocks area.

Afterwards, I thought about giving it a try, but my fear got the best of me. I decided to bring along some more people next time to bolster my courage. We quickly left and headed to another area.

Next up are the must-try foods recommended by our tour guide at this place.

The recommended food here by the tour guide is the combination of corn and soda. It costs 5 Australian dollars per set, which is relatively cheap.

The combination of corn and soda is similar to the experience of buying boiled corn from a small truck after hiking in Taiwan. The taste of the corn is like sweet fruit corn, but it doesn't really match with the soda. As a corn lover, I would rate the corn as very delicious and sweet, but the soda is just average. If I come back next time, I would probably only buy a corn without the soda

We also bought the famous and supposedly delicious Connoisseu mooncake ice cream, but I personally didn't like it. I found it to be extremely sweet, and after living in Australia for two years, I rarely bought this brand again.

One more unique ice cream that we bought was Baileys Irish Cream ice cream. However, it only appeared in supermarkets occasionally. It was very delicious with a sweet vanilla and a slight hint of alcohol. I remember it was quite expensive at the time, so I only dared to scoop a little bit each day and put it back in the fridge.

There was also this MM chocolate ice cream, which was super delicious. The crunchy chocolate shell paired with the MM chocolate was unbeatable. I wonder why it's not available in Taiwan. I could easily eat a dozen of them. On the other hand, famous ice cream brands in Australia were too sweet for me and made me cough due to a sore throat.

The Rocks Market

The Rocks Market also offers a close-up view of the Sydney Harbour Bridge, which is very refreshing to walk around. The streets are not only very clean, but the houses are also very beautiful. There are no unnecessary advertisements or signs, and the store signs, while simple, are still eye-catching. Besides being aesthetically pleasing, there is nothing else but beauty to admire.

We passed by a cute little bakery with a lovely display window, and the most famous meat pie. However, people who are afraid of the taste of meat may not dare to try it.

Walking here, I felt like I was transported back to the 1900s. This is definitely a must-visit place. It's a market that you'll want to come back to again and again.
