I have always known that there is a hundred-year-old prison in the city center of Melbourne, but I always miss it because its exterior is too unremarkable, as shown in the first picture.
One day, I suddenly felt the urge to go in and take a look. Prior to this, I had only visited the old prison in Chiayi and I highly recommend everyone to see this historical site. After the visit, you won't want to commit any crimes and the furnishings in the prison are preserved in their original state, exuding a strong historical atmosphere.
Therefore, I wanted to see the cultural differences between the prisons in Melbourne, Australia and Taiwan.

After purchasing my ticket at the counter, I entered the prison and immediately noticed that the atmosphere was different. Even though it was daytime and many people were visiting, it felt a bit cold inside.

The design of the prison after entering made me feel like I was in an old train station, perhaps due to the heavy use of iron materials in the construction of the space. There is natural light coming in from the roof, but overall the lighting still feels quite dim and gloomy, possibly because the windows are also made of iron bars that block out much of the sunlight.

There are three floors in total, and some of the cells can be visited, with displays of handcuffs or torture devices used at that time

There were also some homemade helmets worn by the infamous "Kelly Gang" on display, and visitors can even try on the iron clothing and helmet worn by the gang at that time. In the photo, my friend and I played the role of the Kelly Gang, but we didn't look fierce at all. We looked like petty thieves who would be caught by the police soon.
I tried on the helmet and almost went bald. Actually, the shape is quite similar to the masks worn by welders. It was a very interesting experience. I also saw parents bringing their children to try it on. I believe the children who visit here will become well-behaved after they leave.

I also discovered the gallows on the second floor. Although it is no longer in use, looking at the gallows made me recall the image of the criminals being hanged there, which was a bit uncomfortable, so I quickly left this area and went to the third floor.

The space on the third floor should be the brightest level.

The third floor also had prison cells with exhibits and explanations, as well as a cute little television. However, I had difficulty understanding many of the words due to my poor English skills, which was a bit of a shame.

However, the most interesting prison experience was the Watch House Experience. As long as you have a ticket, you can queue up and experience being a prisoner for a few hours. You even have to queue up outside first, and surprisingly, there are parents bringing their children to participate too. As I had never participated in such an activity before, I had always thought it would be like a guided tour in Taiwan, but I was completely wrong.
Taking part in this experience does not allow photography, and it is only permitted after the experience is over. The reason is what I'm about to explain next. We stood in front of an iron gate, ready to enter at 1 pm, and it's important to note that when booking tickets, there is a schedule outside of the guided tours.
So here is my attempt to sketch out the experience as much as possible.
As soon as the clock struck one, a person in police uniform opened the door. I wasn't quite sure whether they were actors or real police officers. Then suddenly, they started yelling at us to line up, and I instantly felt like a real criminal.

After entering, we had to line up in the corridor, and someone laughed, which resulted in us being scolded. That's why we were not allowed to take photos or videos.
Once we entered the room, we were made to stand in a line in the corridor. Someone laughed, and immediately the "police officer" scolded us for it. That's when I realized why photography was not allowed.
After standing in the line, we were called into a room that looked like a police station. Each person was given a small card with their name and the crime they had committed written on it. It was like this diagram I drew, and I thought we were supposed to hold it in our hands, but I was wrong.

The police will start calling out names and questioning you about your name and the crime you committed. At this point, I was so nervous that it felt like suddenly being called out in an English class. I was thinking that with so many people, they wouldn't call out my name, but I ended up being called out.
The problem was, the name of the role I got was super difficult, not something simple like Amy or Tony. It was a long string of name, and I couldn't read it, so I shamelessly asked the girl next to me who looked like she was from Hong Kong.
I am truly grateful that she saved my life. As expected, the police immediately scolded me, "Can't you even pronounce your own name?" Coincidentally, my offense was drunk driving, and the police added, "Have you had too much to drink?"

Going through different areas of the prison with the police, we arrived at a cell without any windows, just chairs. We were all made to sit on these small chairs in this tiny space, and after a brief lecture, the door was shut on us. It was a punishment of darkness, and after a while, it felt quite scary. However, we were only locked up for a few minutes, while real prisoners can be locked up for 23 hours. The whole experience made me not want to be a criminal.

The next room we went to had walls made of a sponge-like material to prevent prisoners from committing suicide.
If the prisoner doesn't behave, they will also be locked up in this room to prevent them from hurting themselves.
I find this room more frightening, perhaps because the sponge-like walls can make you feel trapped after looking at them for a while.
Afterwards, we were taken to an outdoor yard, which was the prisoners' recreation time, and we could move around freely. The police officer gave us a gentle talk after the explanation, and I felt like I was being released from prison and starting over. I even wanted to eat a bowl of pig trotter vermicelli (a Taiwanese tradition upon being released from prison).

Another thing to be aware of is that the walls here cannot be touched randomly. Some places may have hidden mechanisms, which were designed to prevent prisoners from escaping.
fter the tour, you will have the freedom to explore and take pictures. You can even take some pictures here at the prison entrance, although it may feel a bit ominous.

After the whole experience, I found it to be quite fun. The interactive and immersive explanation was more impressive than just simply introducing the prison. However, a good command of English is needed as a prerequisite for a more immersive experience.

I always turn to look at commemorative coins, and this one featured the famous Australian bushranger, Ned Kelly. He is one of the most well-known figures in Australian history, known for his Robin Hood-like character and for robbing from the rich and giving to the poor. Although considered a hero by the people, Kelly was captured by the police and executed by hanging. Over 60,000 people signed a petition requesting the government to commute his sentence, but to no avail. Kelly remains a controversial figure to this day, seen as a symbol of resistance and rebellion by some, while others view him as a criminal and a threat to law and order.
It's surprising to find out that my favorite game, Red Dead Redemption 2, also pays tribute to Ned Kelly. I really love the attention to detail in this game.

The Melbourne Gaol is rated 2 stars for a simple visit, and 5 stars for participating in the experiential activities.

Nowadays, there are even more experiential activities, which seem more exciting. I suddenly feel that the experience I participated in was just a small case. (Picture taken from the official website)
