My friends and I drove to Werribee, a century-old castle estate. The entire estate is massive, and as we walked towards the castle entrance, we could already see the castle built in 1877.

The Italian architectural style is truly exquisite, and unconsciously, our strides became more graceful. From a distance, we could see people relaxing under umbrellas, enjoying meals and fine wine beside the historically rich castle. I couldn't help but imagine that the lives of nobles in the past might have been just as leisurely. Carrying my film camera, I took numerous photos, and developing them only amplified the authentic historical ambiance they captured.

The 19th-century castle estate, despite its hundred-year history, rivals modern houses effortlessly. It truly lives up to being the lavish mansion built by the large landowners of that era. I adore this style of architecture so much; I can't wait to step inside and explore.

The entrance is located directly beneath the castle. Upon entering the main gate, there's a simple ticket booth to the right. Admission is priced at 11.5 Australian dollars (approximately 230 Taiwanese dollars). Personally, I find this price very worthwhile for the visit. After all, inside, there are over 60 rooms, requiring at least an hour to explore, and this doesn't even include the adjacent rose garden next to the castle.
Upon beginning the tour, there's a slight damp smell reminiscent of the mustiness that arises when books have been stored for an extended period. Perhaps owing to its century-old history, this characteristic odor actually adds to the experience of exploring the castle, providing a more immersive atmosphere.

Upon entering, you'll notice numerous paintings adorning the walls, depicting leisurely activities and finely detailed drawings resembling newspaper illustrations, chronicling life within the estate. Art enthusiasts would fall in love with this place because it's truly exquisite.

The room's furnishings appear quite new due to the castle's renovation. While there might be a slight sense of contrast, it doesn't detract from the room's intricate details. For instance, the beams overhead are carved to resemble what seems like an eagle, and the carvings and lighting fixtures on the archways are exquisitely beautiful. The animal-themed carpet on the floor is also astonishing, reflecting the meticulousness of wealthy people's furnishings in the 19th century.

The most astonishing aspect for me was the artwork adorning the castle walls. One piece, in particular, appeared like an oil painting from afar, but upon closer inspection, revealed itself to be a three-dimensional art piece. Exploring the castle felt akin to playing a game, constantly discovering these delightful surprises hidden throughout.

I noticed that each fireplace was unique in its design, and even the carpets were meticulously coordinated. The vases and clocks in every room were so appealing that I wished I could take them home.

Some rooms might be relatively plain without any particular adornments, but the room divider screen steals the spotlight entirely. It resembles a piece of art comprising four paintings, exuding the finesse of an oil painting. Despite the screen's full design, it doesn't appear cluttered in the slightest.

Visiting these artworks makes me eager to inspect them up close. Although the desire to explore finer details is strong, they are cordoned off to preserve the castle and prevent any damage to these exquisite pieces of art.

This room serves as the study, and despite the multitude of elements within the space, it doesn't feel tacky. Each decoration enhances the room, especially the beautifully designed fireplace. It makes me want to start a fire and stay here, but I'd probably end up sneezing non-stop due to allergies.

The dining room's arrangement seemed to be for Christmas, showcasing a meticulous attention to detail and the festive spirit of that time.

Even the smaller dining tables were elegantly set up; I wish I could have sat down and enjoyed a meal there too.
As you walk along the corridors, you'll notice numerous oil paintings adorning the walls, creating an ambiance reminiscent of an art gallery. Even at the corners, there are displayed collections of art pieces.

Further ahead, you'll encounter a finely carved mirror mounted on the wall, with candle holders situated beneath it. It's unclear if this design serves the purpose of enhancing visibility at night, yet during the day, it already creates a sense of enchantment akin to a magical mirror.

Next up is the kitchen, and this oven strongly resembles the one used by the grandmother in "Kiki's Delivery Service." It's a complete set preserved in its entirety. The oven door is incredibly heavy, indicating it required self-burning fuel in the past. Cooking must have been quite a messy affair, leaving faces covered in soot. Even though wealthy households would have had kitchen staff, this kitchen from the past is surprisingly shorter than I imagined. As someone on the shorter side, I feel it's just the right size for me to use.
The entire castle has two floors and an attic that one could ascend to. However, access was restricted at the time with barricades in place, so exploring the attic was off-limits.

The second floor features walls adorned in a combination of cream and aquamarine hues, embellished with touches of gold. The staircase and carpets consist of darker wooden tones with iron components. The overall design beautifully blends opulence with elegance. Even the floor's design is meticulous, showcasing remarkable craftsmanship. However, the identity of the designer from that time remains unknown, adding to the castle's sense of mystery.

A hallmark of opulent estates is the presence of crystal chandeliers adorning the ceilings, while portraits of family members grace the walls.

Walking downstairs, you'll encounter a vast floor-to-ceiling window and even two sculptures of goddesses holding lamps, welcoming you. This is by far the most impressive mansion I've seen in my life. I initially thought the castle might appear quite old-fashioned, but I was mistaken.

In the castle, it's quite common to see numerous animal taxidermies hanging on the walls; you come across many while exploring. It was probably fashionable back then to display hunting trophies on the walls. These taxidermies are incredibly realistic, down to the details of the animals' eyelashes.

The entire castle is just so vast that it can feel a bit eerie when you reach parts where there aren't many people around.

There's another room on a mezzanine level where sunlight streams in directly from above, creating a naturally illuminated space where there's no need for artificial lighting. This room feels more like a grand library and features a wrought-iron spiral staircase leading to the upper level, while the lowest level hosts a dining area.

After the tour, I was headed to see the rose garden with 5,000 roses. On my way there, I noticed some flowers near the castle that were even taller than me, and I couldn't resist taking a few pictures.
The following are the photos I took with my film camera.

"Is there a special atmosphere to them?"
There's also a greenhouse here, but it wasn't open, so I continued walking. After a short distance, I reached the rose garden, where the roses were even taller than me.

The garden features a small gazebo surrounded by roses, perfect for leisurely activities—a fit for my old soul. Coming here to daydream, enjoy tea, read, or chat during idle moments feels like life's little romantic escapes from boredom.

I also captured a crow perched in this garden. Perhaps, like me, it also enjoys this place very much.
The phrase "little escapes from life" that comes to mind—it must be about us, right?

This place is perfect for capturing with a film camera. The photos have a unique feel that I personally love; the colors evoke a sense of being transported back to that particular time and space.

Feeling weary from walking, I headed to the small restaurant beside the castle to take a break. I ordered two scones, some delectable-looking pastries, and a must-try rose wine to experience a bit of the aristocratic life.

If you'd like to take a rest, you can also picnic on the large lawn in front of the castle. The entire area spans ten hectares, which is quite extensive. I really enjoy the atmosphere here, and they've also added a zoo for visitors to explore, although separate tickets are required for entry.

The most remarkable thing is that the official website offers a 3D guided tour, allowing you to explore without buying tickets. They also provide the option for a Chinese-guided tour, which is considerate. However, personally, I'd recommend visiting in person to witness the historical culture preserved within the castle.

The 3D tour allows you to access the top floor directly via the spiral staircase, something I couldn't do at the time, providing a view from the highest point right on the webpage.

The entertainment rooms I didn't get to visit at that time can now be viewed online, and the image quality is clear.

I took a one-hour 3D online tour myself, feeling like I revisited the castle once again. I discovered more areas I hadn't noticed before. However, it might not be suitable for those prone to motion sickness, as prolonged viewing could cause dizziness.

Manor Castle Trivia: After the owner of the estate committed suicide, this grand residence was repurposed as a Catholic seminary. It was only later purchased by the government of Victoria and underwent renovations before being opened to the public for visits.
If you loved Downton Abbey, then this place is perfect for you.
